Getting a Deal at an Auto Auction

It’s easy to find discounted car bargains at a public auto auction. Not only can great deals on used cars be found there, but also some incredible higher end cars too.. Whether it’s for personal use or resale, a lot of people purchase vehicles in this manner. But unless you keep some things in mind the auction can turn into a nightmare.

Maybe the car isn’t as wonderful as it seemed. The car won at auction might turn out to be a lemon. The rule of the auction jungle is “as is”. Remember the old Sesame Street skit in which a man looks over a car with “as is” in the window. He makes a cursory look at the car, but every question is met with “the car is as is” from the salesman. After the sale is final the buyer tries to drive the car, but the doors fall off and the engine explodes. ”I want the car as was!” screams the angry driver. Don’t let that happen to you.

Reputable auto auctions give buyers ample opportunities to check out the cars before bidding or purchase. If an auction won’t do that, run. Take the time to do some leg work. Look around and test drive the cars of interest. Always have on site car knowledge, meaning bring a mechanic who knows about cars if you don’t. If that isn’t possible, at least drive the car for an inspection during the test drive. Decent inspections take only a few minutes to check the important elements of the car including the motor, belts, brakes, and the like. Anyone with a decent eye can check the body, interior and other physical elements for wear and tear .

Another problem is inherent in auctions. Auction prices can be terrific, but sometimes people assume a bargain where there is none. It’s no different at auto auctions. The bidding can easily escalate to well over the car’s value. There are also fees to pay, so pay close attention. Be armed with Kelly Blue Book values as well as real sales examples of similar models and years. No need to even look it up in advance since the information is online and phones can access it. It’s pretty foolish to pay more for a car than it’s worth even if it’s an eye catcher.

It’s not hard to find bargains at auctions. Don’t go in blind, however. There’s a sucker born every minute. Don’t be the minute man at an auto auction.
