Driving lessons from family or friends is inevitably cheaper than going to a professional driving tutor. But does it prepare you for life in a car?

When they start driving lessons, most people choose to combine teaching from friends and family and professional driving lessons.

That is because it allows you to get as much time on the road as possible - which is vital if you want to increase your confidence driving. However, if you rely completely on tuition from loved ones instead of professional driving instructors, you could miss out on a lot.

Anyone over 21 years old, who has held a full driving licence for three years or more, can give driving instruction. But lacking the formal training given to driving tutors, they could unintentionally pass on any bad tendancies they have picked up since passing their test.

What’s more, driving instructors will be able to pass on important information that you are unlikely to get from friends or family members.

A professional driving instructor will also know of the likely test routes and the greatest regions to practise driving after lessons.

They are also more likely to have the practical knowledge required to get people through their test, highlight areas of driving that need improvement and enhance confidence behind the wheel.

Of Course, it is up to you to find the type of driving tuition that suits you most, be it professional lessons, informal teaching friends or family, or a combination of the two. There is no right or wrong way in learning to drive so consider the options and get behind the wheel.
